Palo Verde Tree Disease and Insect Management

Hello, this is Warner with Warner's Tree Surgery. It's February 23, 2017. I'm looking at a Palo Verde tree that's got a problem with insects. The way you can tell this has got insects in it is by the scarring created by the fungus that the insects carry with them.

Common Insects and Diseases Affecting Palo Verde Trees:

Palo Verde Longhorn Beetle:

Attacks the roots of Palo Verde trees.

Adults surface in May to June and can stay in the tree for five to six years, eventually eating the roots.

Controlled by injecting the tree with quick-acting poison and following a yearly treatment regimen.

Flathead Borers:

Invade sunburned or damaged areas along the trunk and branches.

Adults lay eggs under the bark; larvae feed on deadwood and create small tunnels.

Damage occurs beneath the bark and can go unnoticed for long periods.

Round Headed Borers:

Similar to flathead borers, attack the trunk and branches.

Controlled by monitoring and treating affected areas.

Acacia Whitefly, Aphids, and Psyllids:

Affect the foliage of desert trees.

Whiteflies appear dark gray or black and reproduce rapidly, causing significant foliage loss.

Aphids attack new growth on the tips of twigs, depositing honeydew that blackens leaves and twigs.

Psyllids feed by scraping the undersides of leaves, causing blotchy yellowing and reducing plant growth.
