Afghan Pine Tree Care and Disease Management

Hi everyone, and welcome to Warner's Tree Surgery where we have been treating sick trees for over fifty years. I'm Pat, and I'm here to talk to you about one of the most common trees in Arizona, the Afghan Pine. Also known as Mondell Pine or Eldarica Pine, it is a desert tree that can grow up to forty feet tall and has long green needles in bunches of two or three. It is popular for its drought tolerance, wind resistance, and ornamental value.

Common Problems Affecting Afghan Pine Trees:

Tip Blight:

A fungal disease that affects the new growth of the pine.

Causes tips of the branches to turn brown and die, and may produce black fruiting bodies on infected tissue.

Prevented by avoiding overwatering, over-fertilizing, and wounding the tree.

Controlled by pruning infected branches and applying fungicide.

Root Rot:

A fungal disease that attacks the roots of the pine.

Causes needles to turn yellow, brown, and dry, but they do not fall off.

Prevented by planting in well-drained soil, watering deeply but infrequently, and avoiding mechanical damage to the roots.

No effective treatment once the tree is infected.

Insect Pests:

Aphids:

Small, sucking insects that feed on the sap of needles and secrete a sticky substance called honeydew.

Controlled by spraying the tree with water, insecticidal soap, or horticultural oil.

Borers:

Larvae of beetles or moths that tunnel into the wood and feed on the inner bark.

Prevented by keeping the tree healthy and stress-free, and applying a systemic insecticide to the soil or trunk.

Pine Tip Moths:

Small, gray moths that lay eggs on the buds of the pine; larvae bore into buds and feed on new tissue.

Controlled by pruning infested tips and applying a contact insecticide to the buds.
